Miami is one of the best places in the country to shoot video. The light is incredible, the locations are endless, and the city looks good on camera almost any day of the year. Almost. From June through November, rainy season and hurricane season add a layer of planning that can make or break a production schedule.
The good news: with the right plan, you can shoot successfully in Miami all summer and fall. Here’s how we approach it.
Know the Daily Weather Pattern
Summer and early fall in South Florida follow a fairly predictable rhythm. Mornings are often clear, clouds build through midday, and short, heavy storms roll through in the afternoon. They usually pass quickly, but they can stop an exterior shoot cold.
For outdoor scenes, we like to schedule the most important exterior shots in the morning and keep the afternoon flexible. Golden hour after a storm can also be spectacular, so it pays to be ready when the sky clears.
Build in Weather Days
For any shoot that depends on exteriors, a weather day in the schedule is cheap insurance. Talk through it during pre-production: which scenes can move, which talent and locations are flexible, and what the decision point is for calling a delay.
Have an Indoor Backup
A solid plan B keeps a shoot moving when the weather doesn’t cooperate. That might mean a second location with interiors, a studio setup, or rearranging the shot list to pull indoor scenes forward. Our guide to filming locations in Miami is a good place to start scouting options.
Watch the Tropics
From August through October, keep an eye on the forecast in the week leading up to a shoot. Tropical systems can change plans days in advance, affecting travel, locations, permits and crew availability. Setting clear expectations with clients and talent about how a storm threat would be handled avoids confusion later.
Protect the Gear
Humidity and sudden rain are hard on cameras, lenses and lighting. On summer shoots, plan for rain covers, pop-up tents, and time for lenses to acclimate when moving from air-conditioned spaces into the heat to avoid fogging. You can see the equipment we work with on our gear page.
Take Care of the Crew and Talent
Heat is a real factor in Miami from late spring through fall. Shade, water, cooling breaks and realistic call times keep everyone safe and performing well. Makeup and wardrobe teams should plan for humidity too.
The Upside of Shooting in the Off Season
Summer and early fall are quieter for tourism, which can mean easier access to some locations and a less crowded city in the background. With smart scheduling, the season can work in your favor.
